Off-leash etiquette in five minutes
Off-leash areas work because everyone follows the same few unwritten rules. Here they are, written down.
- Recall comes first. If your dog won’t come back when called, practise on a long line before letting them go.
- Read the sign. Some areas are off-leash only at certain times, or only in part of the park.
- Watch your dog, not your phone. Most scuffles start while owners are looking elsewhere.
- Ask before dogs meet. Some dogs are nervous, recovering or in training.
- Pick up, every time. Bring a spare bag for the owner who forgot theirs.
- Know when to leave. If your dog is overwhelmed or playing too rough, head off and try another day.
Every off-leash area in Waggy Paths shows its leash rules and whether it’s fenced, so you know what to expect before you arrive.
